Frank Hannig was a marine environmental enthusiast and international scuba diver. He served in many capacities in the local community, including as Foreman of the local Grand Jury. His wife, Theresa Hannig, was an educator and taught school in several communities, including Redwood City. They both were selected as Outstanding Citizens for their work for dozens of non-profits.

Hannig Environmental Research Organization (HERO) pays tribute to their combined talents and interests - focusing on marine and rain forest ecology and environmental justice for our fragile marine environment.
