Dr. Benjamin LaBrot attended the Royal College of Surgeons, Ireland and worked as a hospitalist before founding the Floating Doctors in 2009 to deliver acute care and capacity-building to underserved groups in Haiti, Honduras, and currently a large indigenous population spread across 10,000 square miles of jungle in Panama. Dr. LaBrot is the founder of RemoteCare Education, a professor of Global Medicine at the University of Southern California and the University of California, Irvine medical schools, and an FDA compliance advisor for Genentech/Roche.

Dr. LaBrot says that the most heartbreaking part of doing medicine in underserved areas is when your backpack is empty and there are still many people in need. For him, Floating Doctors is “A much bigger backpack over thousands of miles; after my first experience in international medicine I swore I would return with more help, and now I have the chance to keep my promise.”
